First Portraits

The kids at BGC Ottawa (Boys and Girls Clubs of Ottawa) were such great sports. They were asked to give their time and perspectives on what t means to them to be part of the club. We heard real experiences, and even realer emotion. The most prominent of them, was joy. You can see it in these, their first studio portrait sessions ever. I think they had some fun, too.

The results of a long afternoon of personal discovery, camaraderie , and a little trepidation (I mean, backdrops, lighting diffusers, reflectors, a tripod with a huge camera and lens on it? Like, what?) What a shy, but brave little trooper.

The kids were asked to reflect on their favourite moments at the clubs, and to help define what makes it so special. the ironic real answer is that the kids make the clubs, not the other way around.

The true reflection of a successful portrait session can be seen in these photos. Candid moments of kidding around, some mugging, and lots of hamming it up for the camera.

Some real moments come from the shots between the shots. Here, while waiitng, setting up, moving reflectors, guards come down, and we can experience a true moment of calm reflection.
